Assistant Configuration
Custom instructions, web search, file uploads, and chat history.
The Assistant page lets you configure how the AI assistant behaves for everyone in your workspace.
Settings tab
Three feature toggles, each off by default:
Web search
When on, members can let the assistant pull from the live web during chats. Off means the assistant only uses internal data (Vault, meetings, calendar).
File uploads
When on, members can attach files to chat conversations. Off hides the paperclip icon entirely.
Chat history
When on, member conversations are persisted and searchable. Off means each conversation only exists during its session.
Advanced tab
Assistant name
Up to 100 characters. The name your assistant goes by in member chats. Common choices: MainBranch, your company name, a friendly nickname. Falls back to the system default if empty.
Custom instructions
Up to 4,000 characters. Free-form instructions that apply to every chat conversation in your workspace. Some examples:
- Prefer concise answers.
- When generating code, default to TypeScript.
- Avoid em dashes in user-facing copy.
- We're a healthcare company — always disclaim "this is not medical advice" in responses about health.
Custom instructions are invisible to members in the conversation but shape every response.
Custom instructions only apply to chat. They don't influence presentations, smart forms, meeting summaries, or other tools.
MainBranch cannot guarantee instructions perform exactly as expected. Verify behavior after updating them.
Saving
Changes save when you click outside an input or toggle. There's no separate save button.
Audit
Every change to assistant configuration is recorded in the audit log.
